Staying Safe in Bear Country

  • At camp, be sure and store all food, trash and attractants (toiletries, toothpaste, lotions, etc.) properly when not in immediate use. Never store this stuff in your tent or backpack!

  • If you choose to bag & hang these items, choose a location that is at least 100 yards (1 football field) away from your tent. Be sure that when suspended, your storage bag is at least 10 feet above the ground (about twice your height) and 4 feet from any vertical support (black bears are good climbers, don’t allow them to climb and snag your stuff!)

  • If you choose to use a bear-proof container, be sure it is certified by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (IGBC) and not damaged!
