A little bit about planning…
Most of the Wind River backcountry is wilderness. It’s really important to understand what to expect while adventuring in a wilderness. It is unlike other backcountry areas and requires careful and thorough planning and preparedness. It requires self-reliance and the skills & ability to make good decisions.
Planning should be a really fun part of your experience as you anticipate your adventure, challenges you expect and sights you will see! Good planning will certainly enhance your experience, your enjoyment of the resource and will provide for your safety.
This is when you study up on this area and get to know it well before you show up. Spend some time studying the maps, mapping software, mapping apps. Get a feel for the lay of the land. Contact the land managers and community business that have good info. Study up on some reputable websites. Know the hazards, the conditions, what’s happening. All in advance, right? Try and know enough where the locals think you’re local, whereas in reality, you just did your homework!
In short, proper planning will allow you and your family & friends to
